Welcome to the Graduate Program pages for the Department of Speech Communication at SIUC.
The Department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in Speech Communication. Doctoral graduate students elect to specialize in one of six concentrations: Communication Pedagogy; Gender, Sexuality, and Communication; Intercultural Communication; Interpersonal Communication; Performance Studies; and Rhetoric and Philosophy of Communication. Courses also are available in critical/cultural studies, organizational communication, public address, and public relations.
We’re a very active department—faculty and graduate students give an average of more than 175 presentations each year at professional conferences. Our department sponsors a professional seminar series, teacher training workshops, and extensive production opportunities in our performance laboratory, the Marion Kleinau Theatre. The Department cooperates closely with the department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at SIUC, which offers an 18-hour graduate program certificate. In addition, we have an active mentoring program for first-year graduate teaching assistants and many other formal and informal projects and programs.
All prospective students must apply on-line to the Graduate School. Please send all official transcripts from each college and university attended to the Department address below. Click here to read a general overview of the current application process.
