Welcome to SIU Debate!
Tradition of Excellence:
Southern Illinois University has a long history of success in competitive debate, with three National Championships, five National Sweepstakes Championships, and three National Top Speaker Awards spanning several decades of competition in CEDA, NPDA, and NPTE.
Recently, the team has improved its legacy by winning the 2008 NPTE National Championship, the 2008 NPDA Top Speaker Award, and by finishing 2nd in the 2009 NPTE National Tournament.
SIU teams were ranked #1 and #2 in the country during the 2009-10 and 2010-11, 2011-12 and finished in 3rd place at the season-ending national tournaments all of those seasons.
Current Members:
The debate team is headed by Director of Debate, Dr. Todd Graham, and also benefits from the contributions of graduate assistants Kyle Cheesewright and Steve Farias.
Saluki Debate currently has four competitors, all of whom had extensive debate experience in high school. All team members are required to maintain strong academic credentials while participating in debate, undergraduate research, community service, and other extracurricular activities. Debate team alumni have been accepted to and have excelled at top law and graduate schools across the country.
About the Team:
The SIU Debate Team competes in intercollegiate tournaments across the country from September through March. SIU is a proud member of both the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) and National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE), the sponsoring organizations for the two national tournaments held at the end of each school year.
